The storyline follows Jo Ericsson (Noomi Rapace), an astronaut who finds certain aspects of her life altered upon her return to Earth from space.
Jo insists on having witnessed the dead body of a cosmonaut floating in space, but those close to her suspect she may be experiencing burnout, hallucinations, or even a potential psychotic episode.

In a previous episode, Jo Ericsson receives a package from the Marine Observatory in Denmark. Inside are two cassette tapes: one documenting the ISS events during Jo’s space ordeal, and the other from November 23, 1967, recording an accident of a female cosmonaut.
In Episode 5, Jo delves deeper, visiting the Skagerrak Marine Observatory where she meets siblings Laurentz and Walborg. They specialize in recording space events and claim to decode unusual sounds.

Despite Walborg’s attempts to share the message carried in recordings, Jo hears only static. Unable to gather anything concrete, she decided to leave.
Walborg eventually hands over the tapes to Jo, including a mysterious recording from Henry Caldera’s Apollo 18 mission.
What happens at the end of ‘Constellation’ Episode 5?
Upon reaching her cabin in Sweden, Jo listens to the tape that captures the moment when the ISS collides with something. The recording captures Jo’s conversation with her daughter, Alice Ericsson (Davina Coleman and Rosie Coleman), as seen in Episode 1.
She hears Alice calling Jo as “Mamma” in Swedish, just as the collision occurs, and Paul Lancaster’s (William Catlett) voice urgently calls out her name.
Alice shockingly enters the room and insists that the voice on the tape isn’t hers. She clarifies that she neither speaks Swedish nor refers to Jo as “Mamma.”
Alice further mentions that the voice in the tape resembles Valya, a female cosmonaut that she sees in her dreams.
This scene strongly suggests Jo is not with her daughter. In fact, she may not even be in the correct universe.
In an alternate reality, Paul survived while Jo did not. However, as the episode concludes, a scene unfolds where another Alice follows her mother through snowy woods, also calling her “Mamma.”
In a previous episode, we witnessed Alice hiding in the cabin with her father Magnus Taylor (James D’Arcy) in this alternate reality. But wait, isn’t Jo supposed to be dead in this alternate version?
