Scheduled for release in 2023, the Netflix biopic ‘Shirley’, featuring Regina King in the lead role, has undergone a shift in its premiere date and will now be unveiled worldwide on March 22, 2024.
Penned by director John Ridley, and featuring a star-studded cast, the film explores the trailblazing story of Shirley Chisholm, the first Black congresswoman and presidential candidate.
What is the plot of ‘Shirley’?
The narrative unfolds in 1972 when Chisholm etched her name in history as the first Black candidate to pursue a major party’s presidential nomination.
However, her pioneering journey commenced earlier, with her historic election to the US Congress in 1968 as the first Black woman.
Penned and directed by fellow Oscar winner John Ridley, renowned for his screenplay for ’12 Years a Slave’, the film ‘Shirley’ promises to capture and honor Chisholm’s inspirational story.
The official synopsis reads, “Shirley Chisholm makes a trailblazing run for the 1972 Democratic presidential nomination after becoming the first Black woman elected to Congress.”

Regina King, a native of Los Angeles, California, was born to Gloria, a special education teacher, and Thomas King, an electrician.
Her journey in the entertainment industry began with the television show ‘227’ (1985), and she later secured a role in ‘Boyz n the Hood’ (1991).
King’s breakthrough into mainstream recognition came with her portrayal as the wife of Cuba Gooding Jr.’s character in ‘Jerry Maguire’ (1996).
